Feathered Angels

A piece about Little Penguins

(Scientific name: Eudyptula Minor)

Only 30-35cm tall and 1 kilogram in weight, the Little Penguin (Eudyptula Minor) is the world’s smallest penguin.

These feisty, animated, dedicated parents are found along Australia’s Southern coast and New Zealand. They need our constant support and protection.

Little Penguins are vulnerable to warming oceans, attacks from introduced species (such as foxes and feral cats) and oil spills.

Conservation efforts have saved the penguins countless times from oil spills thanks to the knitting and distribution of little jumpers.

A success story

At Phillip Island (Indigenous title: Millowl - Bunurong people) in the state of Victoria, the penguin population was in rapid decline. Land needed by the penguins for survival was bought back from holiday seekers by the government. The holiday homes were removed and a large fence was placed around the area. The fence protected the penguins from feral cats and foxes. Little wooden boxes were built for nesting and today, Phillip island boasts a penguin colony of more than 30 thousand penguins.
